S+ IV Bag
S+ IV bag is a conceptual design of a safer IV bag. It won the iF Design Award in 2017.
Research & analysis
The Painpoint
Patients who are required to stay at the hospital usually need to take IV drips for a long time. The average is 14-16 bags per day.
The Problem of Air Embolism
While an IV bag is being replaced, air can easily go into the tube and form air bubbles. In this case, the patient is in a potentially dangerous situation if these bubbles go into the heart.
CASE 1
The patient receives a fresh IV bag and watches TV. She forgets the presence of the IV.
The patient falls asleep, not paying attention to the volume of IV fluid present in the bag at all.
The nurse who comes to replace the IV is nearing the end of her shift and is sleepy. Because the room’s lighting is adjusted for the sleeping patient, she doesn’t see air in the IV.
case 2
Patient is tired, and does not notice the IV is almost finished.
She dozes off while the IV finishes delivering its last contents.
A nurse forgets to replace the IV. A blood clot forms, causing blood to flow back into the IV.
The formation of a blood clot causes inflammation and bruising. To treat the clot, the nurse must insert a syringe with fluid to eliminate the clot. While this happens, the patient must endure unnecessary pain.
the design concept
S+ Tube Promises More Safety than Ever
The shape of the S-tube maintains constant atmospheric pressure. The solution is kept at the same level instead of falling down, which effectively prevents backwards blood flow.
Eco-Friendly & Simple
The ‘S-shape’ is simply a bent PVC/TPE tube. This simple transformation is all that is needed to prevent clotting, requiring no other devices or add-ons.
